Focus Group Discussion of Muhammadiyah and UMS Leaders
Dr. Haedar Nashir, M.Si as The General Chairman of Muhammadiyah Central Executive attended The Focus Group Discussion (FGD) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), Saturday, March 5, 2016. The FGD event took the theme “Muhammadiyah in Modern Society Struggle”. This FGD is intended to solicit and gather thoughts from Muhammadiyah figures. The results will be published as a effort in a book.
This FGD featured two speakers. First speaker is Prof. Dr. Bambang Setiaji, The Rector of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta and the second is Dr. Haedar Nashir, M.Si. Prof. Dr. Bambang Setiaji emphasized his presentation on how to develop Muhammadiyah using the cloning system. The cloning system can be applied to the development of Muhammadiyah membership commitments through the pension system. Furthermore, the cloning system can be carried out for the establishment of hospitals, superior schools and even Muhammadiyah universities.
Explanation of Dr. Haedar Nashir, M.Si emphasized on the Muhammadiyah’s struggle in the life of the state, nationality and modern society in recent time. Furthermore, Dr. Haedar also discussed the history of the establishment of Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah in the context of efforts to reform and renew the modern da’wah movement of Ahmad Dahlan and his wife. “Dahlan is a reformer. This is due to three things: social reform, da’wah movements, and non-partisan political movements”, said Dr. Haedar.
According to Dr. Haedar, Muhammadiyah is a modern Islamic movement. This movement wants to return Islam to what was taught by the Prophet Muhammad SAW, but the thoughts that developed are modern thoughts. The adoption of modern thought often produces liberal ideas. The concept of the movement like this is known as Islam Berkemajuan or Progressive Islam.
This FGD activity was held by the School of Nationality and Entrepreneurship. This school is a new institution at UMS which is currently led by Dr. Nurgiyatna. Dozens of UMS lecturers attended this activity including The Head of Faculties and Institutions at UMS.
