The achievements of Indonesian Muslim students are increasingly proud. For example, students of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) recently made energy-efficient cars. The three cars made by students are plan to take part in the Energy Saving Car Contest in Malang, 24-28 September 2019. These cars consist of Ababil Evo II, UEV IS Trisula, and Bayu Surya.

Faculty of Engineering students who are members of the ECRC (Electrical Research Center) and Bayu Surya, all of which are a combination of three study programs of Mechanical, Electrical, and Industrial Engineering who make these cars.

The oldest car produced is the Ababil Evo, which is now in the second generation. Previously, the Ababil EVO I car had been included in a contest in Japan 2018 and won the title of the best newcomer. The car body used is made of polycarbonate, while the chassis uses aluminum and iron alloys.

One of the team members, Agus Arif Setiyono, explained that the Ababil Evo is a prototype car that includes in the electric category that uses battery fuel. The Ababil Evo II car, which will be included in the energy-efficient car contest by the Ministry of Research and Technology/National Research and Innovation Agency in Malang, is a refinement of the Ababil Evo I, which made in 2018. “The speed of this car can reach 55 km/hour. In this contest, our team is targeting at least to enter the top seven”, he said.

The supervisor and Deputy Dean III, Muhammad Al Fatih Hendrawan, ST, MT, explained that in the process of making these cars, we encountered many obstacles, starting from materials and materials that have to import from outside the city and while building the car’s body also faced hurdles. However, the most crucial part is the controller, which it’s manufactured, and the testing process often burns. However, after continuous testing, finally, the controller installed in the car is currently the most optimal.

Vice-Rector III of the Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, Taufik Kasturi, said that two years ago, his party could only send one team. However, in 2019, the campus can send three cars consisting of the Ababil Racing Team, UEV IS Trisula, and Bayu Surya. “You have to appear more confident even though you come from private universities, and those participating in this competition are from leading universities in Indonesia. Remember that you are fighting not only for yourself but also for your family and the Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. Hopefully, we can get a medal when we come home, “he ordered.
